Shopify vs. WooCommerce in Colombia: which to choose for your online store

Costs, maintenance, SEO, Colombian payment gateways, shipping and ERP inventory sync: compare Shopify and WooCommerce before you build your online store.

Two online stores compared side by side with a shopping cart and payment gateway

Shopify and WooCommerce are two mature platforms, with large ecosystems and successful Colombian stores built on each. That is why the useful question is not which one is better, but which one fits your budget, your team and the way your business operates.

The underlying difference is the model. Shopify is a hosted service: you pay a subscription and the platform takes care of servers, security and updates. WooCommerce is an open-source plugin for WordPress: you install it on your own hosting, you control everything and you are also responsible for everything. Almost every other difference follows from that.

If you have already decided to launch your store and want to build it on the right platform, see how we approach ecommerce development at Julsmind SAS.

Cost model: where the money goes

Neither is free. What changes is where the cost shows up.

Shopify

  • Monthly subscription depending on the plan you choose
  • Apps from the app store, many with their own monthly fee
  • Premium theme, usually a one-time payment
  • Payment gateway fees on each transaction
  • Depending on the plan and gateway, Shopify may charge an additional transaction fee when you use an external gateway: check the current terms before deciding

WooCommerce

  • The plugin is free, but you need hosting, a domain and an SSL certificate
  • Premium plugins and themes, many with annual licenses
  • Technical hours for maintenance, updates and backups
  • Payment gateway fees on each transaction

In practice, Shopify concentrates the cost in predictable monthly fees and WooCommerce spreads it across hosting, licenses and technical time. To compare them, project the total cost over two or three years with the apps or plugins you will actually need.

Maintenance, control and customization

With Shopify you barely worry about infrastructure: you do not update servers or patch vulnerabilities. The price is that you work within the platform's limits. There are parts of the checkout, the data structure and certain URLs that you cannot change freely, and many features depend on third-party apps that add cost and points of failure.

WooCommerce gives you full control: code, database, server. You can build very specific flows, such as wholesale quotes, prices by customer type or configurable products. In exchange, someone has to keep WordPress, the theme and the plugins updated and compatible with each other, watch security and test before updating. If no one on your team or at your vendor takes on that role, the store degrades over time.

Content and SEO

Both platforms can rank well on Google. SEO depends more on your content, site speed, category architecture and structured data than on the platform itself.

WordPress was born as a content management system, so if your strategy includes a blog, guides and text-rich category pages, WooCommerce gives you more flexibility. Shopify offers a blog and the basic SEO tools, with a more rigid URL structure (for example, fixed prefixes for products and collections). With WooCommerce, on the other hand, performance depends heavily on the quality of the hosting and how many plugins you install.

Payments in Colombia: the decision that weighs most

To sell in Colombia you need gateways that operate locally, such as Wompi, PayU, Mercado Pago or ePayco. The payment methods your customer will see — cards, PSE (Colombia's bank transfer system), digital wallets, cash payments — depend on the gateway you choose, not on Shopify or WooCommerce. In addition, cash on delivery is still very common in the country, and it is worth defining from the start how you will handle it.

Before choosing a platform, check with each gateway:

  • That it has an official, maintained app or plugin for the platform you will use
  • Which payment methods it enables: cards, PSE, wallets, cash
  • Fees, payout times and withdrawal costs
  • How it handles refunds, reversals and chargebacks
  • What reports it provides to reconcile with your accounting

Shipping and inventory synced with your ERP

For shipping, both platforms have apps or plugins to quote rates by city and weight, generate labels with national carriers and handle cash-on-delivery collection. The quality of those integrations varies widely: test them with your real routes before launching.

The most frequent headache is not shipping, it is inventory. If you sell in a physical store, the online store, over WhatsApp and on marketplaces, stock has to come from a single source. Otherwise you sell what you do not have or hide what you do. Ideally your ERP is that source: it publishes products, prices and stock per warehouse to the store, and orders flow back to the ERP to be dispatched and electronically invoiced.

Shopify and WooCommerce offer APIs to make this happen. If you need to connect your store with your ERP, accounting or carriers, check our systems integration service.

When to choose each one

Choose Shopify if…

  • You want to launch quickly without worrying about servers or updates
  • Your catalog and sales process are relatively standard
  • You prefer a predictable monthly cost in exchange for less control
  • You do not have, and do not want to hire, someone to maintain the technical side

Choose WooCommerce if…

  • Content and SEO are at the center of your acquisition strategy
  • You need highly customized sales flows, pricing or products
  • You want full control of the code and your data
  • You have a team or vendor to take on maintenance

If you are torn between the two, decide with three numbers: the projected total cost over two or three years, the technical time you can dedicate each month and the integrations that are non-negotiable for your operation, starting with the payment gateway.
